Wine cellars have something almost sacred for wine lovers. This impression is likely to be reinforced at the Muri-Gries monastery winery in Bolzano. After all, the rooms that are used as cellars today were the church of the then Augustinian monastery until the end of the 18th century. And even today, one can reach the monastery cloister directly from the cellar.
The connection between wine and the monastery, which has existed for centuries, is thus also evident in the monastery complex. Thus, the heart of the vineyards, the Klosteranger, is still part of the monastery complex in the Gries district of Bolzano. In addition, grapes from other vineyards in and around Bolzano and in the Überetsch region come to the monastery winery.
The owner of the winery and vineyard is the community of the Benedictines of Muri-Gries, while the daily work around the wine is in the hands of laymen, first and foremost in those of cellar master Christian Werth. He describes the wines of the monastery winery as "elegant, straightforward, emphatically varietal, powerful and closely linked to their origins".
