Myodesopsia International is a United Kingdom-based charity with a global reach established in 2023. Our mission is to support those who suffer from the ophthalmological condition known as myodesopsia by raising awareness and understanding internationally whilst sponsoring research and collaboration to accelerate the development of safer, more effective, and more accessible treatment options. Also known as "eye floaters" or "vitreous opacities," myodesopsia (my-oh-dess-OP-see-uh) is a condition in which aggregates of proteins or other cellular debris in the vitreous body, an ordinarily transparent gel that occupies the space between the retina and lens of the eye, cast shadows on the retina that create the perception of objects moving in the visual field.
While many people can and do cope with some degree of mild myodesopsia, there exists a sizable subset of patients for whom the condition is seriously debilitating and the impact on quality of life profound. Those afflicted to such a degree may experience great difficulty with activities like reading, driving, or outdoor recreation, and may become anxious, depressed, or socially withdrawn as a result.
We are a group of sufferers who understand intimately the urgent need for better treatment options. We come from different countries and professional backgrounds, but we believe that our common lived experience of the condition, our diverse skillsets, and our extensive network of contacts with clinicians, researchers, and fellow patients position us well to catalyse the change we all hope to see.
