n'Give currently works to create a better future for children living in the slums of Kibera in Kenya. By sponsoring their education, not only are we helping them towards a brighter future, we are also ensuring they have three meals a day and are constantly looked after and taken care of. The families in Kibera are very poor and often go to bed hungry. It is therefore a great economic relief when the children are sent to private schools. Here, they can focus on their studies and they are safe. Kibera is one of the largest slums in Africa housing more than 800.000 residents. The houses are made of cement blocks, mud and tin. Most houses have electricity, but it is often made illegally and therefore poses a dangerous fire hazard. The crime rate in Kibera is high and the children are often exposed to drug abuse, sexual abuse and assaults. Most of the children have lost either both of their parents or one of them. They are therefore incredibly fragile in terms of being looked after. We are working with a local organisation called Mirror of Hope. Mirror of Hope organises Holiday Programmes to get the children out of the slum when they are home on holiday. In most families it is the mothers or grandmothers taking care of the children. The fathers have either left or passed away. They therefore have woman empowerment programmes where they offer training in health education, practical skills, entrepreneurship, micro-financing etc. n'Give strongly believes that education is a universal right and a great step towards a brighter future - not only for the individual, but for the whole world.
