National Infrastructure Laboratory

Located on Boldrewood Innovation Campus at the University of Southampton, the National Infrastructure Laboratory (NIL) hosts engineering laboratories for small and large-scale testing of structures, components and materials both above and below the ground. These facilities provide world-leading test capability allowing the long-term behaviour of structures to be understood. Our facilities include a material and mechanical testing laboratory, geomechanical testing, large structures testing laboratory and a geotechnical centrifuge, full details of which can be found on our website. We work with industry and academia to tackle global challenges relating to engineering structures across all disciplines including civil, mechanical, aerospace and maritime engineering. We have extensive experience working with business to solve their complex engineering problems. We routinely conduct industry projects and commercially sensitive research in our facilities for our external clients. We offer a wide range of services, and our equipment is available for hire to provide support for local, national and international businesses through standard and bespoke testing of components, structures and materials. The NIL can work flexibly to support projects both big and small, ranging from industrial collaboration, direct consultancy or knowledge transfer partnerships.
