NRL is developing a process for manufacture of pulp fibre bottles treated with bio-degradable barrier coatings. The bottles are designed to be recyclable as paper but also rapidly bio-degradable should they end up in the environment. They can replace single use plastic containers, initially for “dry goods” (e.g. greenhouse products, health supplements, granulated foods, pet products) but in due course also for “wet goods” (e.g. beverages). NRL’s bottles offer an environmentally sustainable alternative, but can also be moulded to shape to support brand identity, are cost competitive to many existing packaging formats, and produced on a footprint to be co-located with filling lines.
