About National Association of Women's Organizations in Uganda (NAWOU)
The National Association of Women’s Organizations in Uganda (NAWOU) is a leading national umbrella organization consisting of clusters of grassroots women’s organizations that form themselves into district and regional women’s networks, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Faith-based organizations (FBOs) and Women’s professional bodies. NAWOU boasts of being the most grounded women’s Organisation because of its members found in all parts of Uganda and as the oldest based on its foundation as the National Council for women in 1960s. Our membership is diverse, spanning with a wide range of issues including governance, leadership development, economic emancipation and justice, education, HIV response, advocacy for the rights of women and development, health, disabilities and other vulnerabilities. We have a strong rural presence and focus, to cater for our rural based target. Our Vision: “A society where women are self-reliant and free from injustice” Our Mission: “To promote the growth of a women’s movement through a strong network that advocates for the rights of women in Uganda.” Our work is guided by core values that are fundamental and ideal at the heart of the association, and these are: •Teamwork •Integrity •Non-Discrimination and participation. Through the Economic Empowerment Program, NAWOU is running the HANDMADE social enterprise program that exists to extend economic empowerment opportunities to vulnerable women who are organized into groups. The program significantly aims at amplifying the women's entrepreneurial skills and potential to fashion artistic handmade products that portray Uganda's cultural heritage. Anti-terrorism Clause ‘’NAWOU has a zero tolerance to fraud, illegal or corrupt practices, sexual abuse and harassment. NAWOU therefore requires its employees and stakeholders to observe high standards of business and personal ethics in the conduct of their duties and responsibilities.''
