NCC Skills is one of England’s largest and most successful providers of Basic Skills in Maths and English to adult learners. We work in partnership with Further Education colleges, consortia, businesses and training providers. For our students, we’re life-changers. When our students come to us, many are unable to calculate how much they can spend on food and household necessities. They struggle to fill in simple forms. At Christmas, they may not be able to calculate how long the turkey should be cooked for. At work, they tend to be stuck in low-earning, low-status roles. And, crucially, as parents they lack the confidence and abilities to help their children with their school work and encourage their learning. But we’re doing something about it by breaking the cycle of underachievement and unlocking potential. No one wants to put up their hand and say, ‘I can’t read fluently’ or ‘I can’t add up a simple row of numbers’. Many of those with poor basic skills are highly talented people. They’re ashamed of the fact they struggle with basic literacy and numeracy, but our specialist tutors know how to dispel the stigma and win their trust. The results are, simply, astounding.
