In a growth company(startup/scale up) things evolve at a rapid speed. A good idea turns into a prototype, turns into an MVP, turns into a market lunch, turns into a VC investment, turns into an increase in headcount and a discovery that probably someone should be "the manager". That manager is often a first-time manager. Someone who has not had the responsibility of management or people management before. Someone with tremendous talent and drive but no managerial experience. That person (hopefully) is excited about their new responsibility but because of speed, multi-focus and organizational growth the first time manager can be left with a feeling that no one is available for sparring or guidance. Without support this situation quickly can become a mess. A situation where the new manager tries to please everyone but never really reflects on their own role. In these companies there most likely won't be a support function in People Ops or HR. But the issue is that this new manager is feeling insecure, overwhelmed and out of thin ice. The leadership tries their best to support but they speak another language- they work on the strategies (hopefully) and the first time manager needs tactics, support and conformation. I can be that cheerleader for your first time managers that you need to enable them to succeed.
