Tamana, a non-profit voluntary organisation registered in March 1984, was created solely for the purpose of providing rehabilitative services for the mentally challenged, multiply disabled and those on the autism spectrum. Tamana was born out of the living faith and optimism of Dr. Shayama Chona (Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awardee), mother of Tamana Chona, who was born spastic with cerebral palsy.
For its contribution in the field of disabilities, Tamana was accredited & granted a Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2005.
Tamana has three centres in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. Its first centre 'Tamana Special Education Centre' was inaugurated by the late Lady Diana, Princess of Wales in 1992, and is known as the 'Tamana Special Education Centre'. It was set up to provide rehabilitative services to differently abled children between the age group 5-18 Yrs. The other two are 'Skill Development Centre, Nai Disha which is a Vocational Centre catering to adults, and the ‘The Autism Centre-School of Hope for autistic children and young adults.
Tamana in it’s three centres has 200 plus differently abled students. Majority of our students belong to the economically weaker sections of the society. Our aim is to provide them the best professional services to enable them become inclusive and integrated members of our society to the best of their ability. This aim is realized through an individualized education program for each student which is supported through our in house diagnostics backed by a team of special educators, therapists, vocational trainers, assistants and specialists.
The program is aimed at fostering social and economic independence of the differently abled by incorporating special education, regular academic program through the NIOS, therapeutic interventions, counselling, vocational skill training, extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.
