In 1996 the National Intensive Care Evaluation (NICE) foundation was established by the professional group of intensivists to enable a quality system for Dutch ICUs. Currently, more than 90% of all Dutch ICUs and over 600,000 ICU admissions are included in the NICE database. By this database case-mix corrected outcomes of ICUs are benchmarked and quality improvement activities are initiated.
