The National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) previously known as the Institute of Fundamental Studies (IFS) is the leading basic research institute in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1981 by parliament act No 55. Main objectives of institute is to initiate, promote and conduct basic research and original investigations on fundamental aspects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, life sciences, social sciences and philosophy.
