In its original sense, 'nanotechnology' refers to the projected ability to construct items from the bottom up, using techniques and tools being developed today to make complete, high performance products. The lotus effect refers to the very high water repellency (superhydrophobicity) exhibited by the leaves of the lotus flower. Dirt particles are picked up by water droplets due to a complex micro- and nanoscopic architecture of the surface, which minimizes adhesion. This phenomenon has been researched by scientists and is now being reproduced for use as nanocoatings for several surfaces. These coatings help minimise costs, as they make harmful cleaning techniques practically redundant.
