‘Sensitive’ isn’t usually seen as a positive quality in the Western World, particularly when it comes to business. Yet High Sensitivity is a naturally-occurring temperament trait that around 20% of the population shares. Daniel Pink writes in his book ‘A Whole New Mind - Why Right Brainers Will Rule the World’: “Those with inherent traits of intuition, empathy, compassion, creativity & the ability to see the Big Picture, are the ones who’ll get ahead.” These are all traits Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) tend to have. Far from being an impediment, the HS trait confers distinct advantages - when the HSP learns to manage it. Having a brain wired to take in more information and a nervous system that’s highly responsive means the HSP has an evolutionary advantage, keeping themselves and those around them safe. In our fast-paced modern society, however, they’re a fast-track to overstimulation. It’s the consistently overwhelmed HSP who can then suffer from anxiety, depression and burn-out. Common struggles HSPs experience: Overthinking, playing small, not having the courage to put themselves forward for promotion, an inability to say no, boundary setting, taking feedback personally, putting others’ needs before their own, fairness, energy management, lack of validation.
