Northumberland Cheese Company was founded in 1984 at Soppit Farm in Northumberland by Marc Robertson. He began by making a sheep's milk cheese, Redesdale, and further developed his cheese offering when a Gouda recipe was bequeathed to him by a Dutch man . Growth of the business and the addition of the cafe meant that the company had to move to a larger premises in Blagdon in 1996, where they are currently based. Northumberland Cheese Company now make six varieties of farmhouse cheeses, from the bestselling Nettle cheese, Smoked cheese, Northumberland Original, Elsdon goats' cheese and Redesale ewes` cheese. The converted granary building in Blagdon is home to the dairy, despatch, the offices, and The Cheese Loft Cafe and Shop. The Cheese Loft Cafe uses regional produce where possible, including ham from Rothbury, milk from Embleton, and Ringtons tea and Pumphrey's coffee. Any cheese dishes are always made with Northumberland Cheese. The shop has a wealth of local produce, including chutneys, honey, jam, and local crafts. There is also a vast array of crackers and cheese accompaniments... and Northumberland Cheese of course.
