Nutcracker Publishing originated to publish a children’s book about cancer. It was during a period when talking about cancer to young children was considered unconventional, and mainstream publishing houses expressed concern there was not a large market for a book targeting young children whose Mother had cancer. As one local bookstore owner said, “no parent would want to read a book about it, unless they had too.”
Within it’s first year the Nutcracker Publishing Company amazed its skeptics and secured a national reputation for its ability to turn public relations disasters into sales and marketing opportunities when "Tickles Tabitha’s Cancer-tankerous Mommy " was introduced on the Rosie O Donnell Show amidst the threat of Anthrax, which shut down O Donnell’s New York studio.
Today the book iis recognized as recommended reading for families coping with cancer by literary and health care professionals across the country.
Nutcracker Publishing also originated --Crack Open A Book! Community outreach, school and educational programs promoting cancer awareness, featuring the “Tickles Tabitha” character.
