NutriPeople provides edible insects as affordable solution against malnutrition to the people living in rural areas of Zambia. Insects are traditionally consumed all over the world and are considered delicious by locals. Creating insect farms next to rural villages guarantees a constant protein supply both for animal feed and for human consumption. This helps to fulfil the people daily protein requirements, that conventional breeding system (cattle, pigs, chickens) cannot cover entirely in these fragile ecosystems. In this way, locals gain a nutritious ingredient that can be include in the local staple foods but also sold in the market to obtain an additional source of income.
People from Zambia loves eating insects and it is common to find popular dishes with insects in many Zambian household. Traditionally, insects are collected wildly by locals at the beginning of the rainy season. This approach makes the supply of insects season-dependent, resulting in a highly unpredictable yield at the end of the hunting period.
In order to cope with the issue, our concept has been based on 5 simple stages, namely:
• Selecting the insect species suitable to set up the farms;
• Building the insect’s farms together with the local institutions and population;
• Monitoring of the farms productivity throughout the year;
• Producing flour out of the insects;
• Educating the local population concerning food safety and nutrition
In this way, the process of harvesting, farming and processing edible insects can improve significantly the nutrition of the local population. Thousands of jobs will be created and the African countries could start gaining a deserved independent position from the rest of the world.
