Founded in 1982 by community activist Miguel Amaro, along with other visionaries, the parade has become an empowering resource and a landmark that confirms the Dominican people’s permanent and influential presence in the U.S. In 2015 a newly formed nonprofit 501(c)3 Dominican Day Parade, Inc. was established. The Dominican Day Parade is a non-partisan organization that strives to provide an understanding of the heritage and contributions of the Dominican community in America and throughout the world. The mission of the Dominican Day Parade, Inc. is to celebrate the richness of the Dominican culture, folklore and popular traditions. It is the largest Dominican parade in the United States, and last year showcased 48 floats, over 8,000 marchers, over half a million spectators and over 1 million media viewers. Scholarships In 2015, we met our goal by providing scholarships to qualified college students. The Dominican Day Parade, Inc. granted 17 scholarships to students in CUNY (Brooklyn, City College, Hostos, Lehman, John Jay, Queens, and York). In 2016 -17, we increased the number of scholarships awards to 25 outstanding Dominicans Students representing 19 colleges and universities from across the United States.
