About NYU Visiting Mentor Development Program

NYU's Visiting Mentor Development Program (VMDP) fosters the development of mentored training in the field of substance use disorders research at health professional schools. Each year, we invite up to 10 interdisciplinary faculty mentors from institutions across the United States to participate in a four-day intensive program at our campus in Manhattan. Visiting mentors observe and participate in selected seminars in our longstanding graduate-level mentored Substance Use Research and Education (SARET) Program, providing them with the opportunity to understand how such fully a developed program can be is structured and how SARET’s web-based learning models can be integrated into its core curriculum. Additional sessions are tailored to visiting mentors’ roles as faculty at their home institutions. Visiting mentors also have the opportunity to network with our research- and education-focused faculty, as well as with participants in prior VMDP cohorts. Following the on-site intensive at NYU, mentors are provided ongoing support through individual meetings at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months and as needed thereafter. These meetings provide one-to-one advice in response to the challenges and questions program alumni encounter, including approaches to recruiting mentors and students, seeking funding sources, and structuring a research program. This program is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and has its academic home in the Department of Population Health’s Section on Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drug Use.
