We campaign for a independent, Kiwi head of State. We are a non-partisan group, with members drawn from all walks of life, and all sides of the political spectrum. We are committed to: • involving all New Zealanders in the debate; • providing relevant and reliable information; • focusing on ideas, not personalities; and • winning a referendum to establish the republic. Creating a republic does not require a codified constitution any change to the Treaty of Waitangi, flag or Commonwealth membership. These principles and objectives are part of our Constitution, and binds all members of the Republican Movement. The Republican Movement encourages and supports debate on republicanism, the different options for a New Zealand republic and related issues through its members, this website and other media. Our policy is that the exact nature of a New Zealand republic - such as whether the head of state is elected directly by the public or indirectly by their parliament - is something for all New Zealanders to decide by a referendum. We are committed to winning such a referendum. Our organisation was formed in March 1994 as the New Zealand republic debate started to heat up. Since then our members have worked as an informal, grass roots network of New Zealanders interested in republicanism. We are building a stronger base of supporters and advocates as the desire for a republic gains momentum.
