As an independent supervisory authority, the OPSC is not subject to any form of outside direction from the Swiss parliament or Federal Council. It ensures the application of consistent supervisory practices within the occupational benefits system and oversees the eight regional authorities responsible for direct supervision. To this end, it has the power to issue directives providing detailed instructions. The OPSC is directly responsible for supervising investment foundations, the guarantee fund and the Substitute Occupational Benefit Institution. It is also the accreditation authority for pension actuaries.
