About Oakland County Board of Commissioners
Established in 1969, the Board of Commissioners is the legislative body of Oakland County. The county is divided into equally populated 19 districts with each district representing approximately 57,000 residents. Commissioners are elected to serve a single district for a four-year term of office. Powers and responsibilities include: •Establish and formulate county policies •Establish annual county property tax millage rate •Adopt ordinances and rules •Adopt annual county budget and long-range capital improvement program •Adopt the county development plan •Adopt and enforce rules establishing the authority, duties and responsibilities of county departments and offices The Board operates under a committee system. The Commission also has four standing committees, which review information and make recommendations for consideration by the entire Board. Those committees are Economic Development and Infrastructure; Finance; Legislative Affairs and Government Operations; and Public Health and Safety. All meetings of the full Board and standing committees are open to the public and provide an opportunity for public comment.
