About Ocean Decade Australia

As an island nation on the blue planet, it is no surprise that there are many hundreds of organisations, institutions, communities and individuals invested in using, valuing, managing and governing the ocean. We work and play, explore and enjoy our ocean. Our lives are interconnected with its ubiquitous influence. But what do Australia's Ocean Stakeholders know about each other? How connected are we? How could we do better, together? At the heart of our mission is collaboration with diverse stakeholders spanning government, business, local communities, indigenous peoples, youth, and research institutions. As a not-for-profit organisation, we provide an independent platform for discussion across sectors. One of our key initiatives involves mapping our national impact to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) goals, ensuring alignment with global objectives, and tracking progress towards achieving shared targets. Additionally, we produce comprehensive reports that document our activities, outcomes, and contributions to advancing ocean science and sustainability. These valuable initiatives support stakeholders, policymakers, and the broader public, providing insights into our collective efforts and guiding future actions. In 2017, the United Nations declared 2021-2030 The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development with a vision to deliver the science we need for the ocean we want. The global community, including many Australians, worked together to develop the mission of the Ocean Decade and the outcomes required for attaining ‘the ocean we want’ by 2030 - the Ocean Decade Framework. Australia is also a member of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, and under the auspices of the Panel, has a commitment to develop a Sustainable Ocean Plan by 2025. Ocean Decade Australia views these international frameworks as an opportunity for collaboration, partnership, learning, action and investment.
