We are a small record label looking to disrupt the standard relationship between artist and label. We strive to help artists build a sustainable career while maintaining their independence. We help artists build a small team to strategically manage their career. We offer services project by project basis. The goal is to teach artists to manage their own media, and to need us less and less with each release.
The major difference between our model and the typical label of the past is the royalty splits. Although our fees fluctuate based on the projects needs, they are no where near the standard 75-90% that labels have been known to take in the past.
These deals were a response to expensive recording studios, physical duplication,products being shipped to retail stores and media outlets being restricted to mainstream television, radio and magazines.
As high as these fees were, the model actually was somewhat fair compared to all of the overhead and the fact that most releases would actually lose money.
These expenses have all but disappeared in the digital age but labels are still utilizing the same heavy handed record contracts, and with streaming dipping into radio royalties, artists on a major labels are forced to tour relentlessly and become multi-venture business people.
OKAY Recordings aims to work with artists one project at a time. Giving the artists the ability to re-negotiate terms with each release, or even move on to full independence if they feel they can handle it on their own. Our plan for most artists is to focus on singles, short 4-5 song EPs, Compilation albums, splits and live releases. Each release will be structured to include a pre-save campaign, a video release and a pr campaign. We will be encouraging artists to do shorter releases every couple months instead of a full release every couple years with a goal of providing a steady stream of quality content that they can build a strong base audience on.
