About OneBAT
OneBAT is a European project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme. In recent years, scientists have discovered new RNA viruses in bats that can cause diseases in humans. Bats are important hosts for many viruses that can potentially spread to humans or domestic animals. OneBAT is a project that aims to understand how these viruses move from bats to humans or animals. It involves a team of scientists from different fields like ecology, virology, and modeling. The project will look at how the environment, the virus, and the animals themselves interact to cause diseases. By studying how these viruses replicate and how the immune system responds to them, OneBAT aims to develop better treatments and preventive measures for diseases caused by these viruses. The project won't study every bat species or virus in Europe but will focus on certain species like Miniopterus schreibersii bats and certain viruses: filoviruses, coronaviruses, and lyssaviruses. OneBAT will also create tools and methods that other researchers can use to study bats and viruses in the future. This includes new ways to test for viruses in bats and tracking systems to monitor their movements. Additionally, the project will provide equipment to southern and eastern EU countries to help them study flying animals. Funded by the European Union.
