Research suggests that individuals presented with an all-encompassing problem tend to explore only a small fraction of the potential solution space. This is caused by people’s tendency to not leave the path of least resistance and reproduce slightly modified or even unmodified ideas that can be directly retrieved from memory. As a result, key solution opportunities are missed. Unaided participants miss on average more than half of the solution categories while generating solutions.
