Welcome to the official page of the 'Optimizing Integrated Mini Grids for Water-Energy-Food (OPTiMG)' project. Our mission is to drive sustainable development in Africa by focusing on integrated Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Systems. The OPTiMG project, part of the Long-term Europe-Africa Partnership on Renewable Energy (LEAP-RE) program, addresses critical challenges in Africa such as lack of electricity and water access, unreliable energy, rural economic development, and food and water insecurity. By studying the complexities of WEF Systems, we aim to enhance reliable energy access and sustainability in the region. Through collaboration with esteemed partners from around the globe, including the Reiner Lemoine Institut (RLI) in Germany, Green Energy Park (GEP) in Morocco, Hassan II University of Casablanca (H2UC) in Morocco, University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in South Africa, and EnGreen Solutions (EGS) in Italy, our project integrates decentralized renewable energy technologies and optimizes water-energy-food systems across Africa. We leverage innovative solutions such as photovoltaics, wind turbines, hydropower, and biogas plants, along with storage systems like batteries, hydrogen, and water tanks, to support productive uses including water pumping, irrigation, and agricultural processing. The outcomes of our project will include pioneering technologies and practical applications for integrated microgrids (iMGs) and WEF systems, cutting-edge demand modeling tools and capacities tailored for iMGs and WEF systems, optimization tools aimed at enhancing WEF supply, and real-world application and demonstration across diverse use cases.
