As the scientific foundation of IG Metall with its headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, the Otto Brenner Foundation awards scientific research projects. In this way, it promotes social discourse and the debate on social and economic developments in Germany and Europe. The Otto Brenner Foundation was established in 1972 from incoming donations on the occasion of the death of Otto Brenner, the then first Chairman of IG Metall.
The Otto Brenner Foundation pursues exclusively charitable purposes. It aims to strengthen democracy in the economy and society by awarding application-oriented research projects.
Fields of action in the sense of the foundation's purposes are:

# Industrial, structural and sectoral policy,
# Corporate responsibility, social integration and diversity management (e.g. right-wing extremism, poverty, migration, discrimination against women in the labour market, etc.).
The Otto Brenner Foundation makes the results of the Foundation's activities available to the public free of charge. This is either through the possibility of ordering workbooks and working papers and/or through "downloads" of the publications.
In addition, the Otto Brenner Foundation annually awards the Otto Brenner Prize for Critical Journalism. The motto of the prize is:
"Critical journalism - thorough research instead of ordered truths".
The Otto Brenner Prize is endowed with prize money totalling 47,000 euros, which is divided into 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, up to three research scholarships, a Newcomer Prize and Media Project Prize, as well as the Otto Brenner Prize "Special", which is awarded directly by the jury for outstanding journalistic analysis, endowed with 10,000 euros. It is not possible to apply for this category.
