In the year that the Netherlands commemorates the abolition of slavery (Commemoration Year 2023-2024), 'Our HERitage' was launched and is now executed with a team of enthusiastic professionals and subsidies from the Fund for Cultural Participation. This initiative highlights the often forgotten lives of Caribbean women during the colonial period, including slavery and indentured servitude, through 50 historical portraits where ethnic and geographical diversity is sought to be achieved.
Our HERitage guides 25-30 participants from the Surinamese and Caribbean communities in discovering their women ancestors and giving them a voice through family stories, archival documentation and historical knowledge.
Our HERitage celebrates strength and aims to offer a different perspective, emphasizing diverse female perspectives within the shared cultural heritage of the Netherlands and the Caribbean (including Suriname and Guyana).
