OVERLEAF aims to develop a game-changing Liquid Hydrogen (LH2) storage tank to enable the transition towards H2-powered aviation, providing a key contribution towards the goals set by the EU Green Deal by 2050 in the aviation sector.

The novel storage concept will be based on the combination of:
innovative functional and high-performance materials (high-performance TP composites and low gas permeation CFRP composites);
thermal insulating materials (low-permeable closed and open-cell foams and nanofoams);
novel hydrogen leak detection sensors (metal hydride palladium-based optical hydrogen sensors).
All these components will be applied using advanced and flexible manufacturing techniques, involving Additive Manufacturing (AM), automated fibre placement (ATL), and filament winding (FW) to build the prototype of a novel light-weight liquid H2 storage system with improved performance and enhanced capabilities for their integration into the aircraft structure. OVERLEAF aims at achieving overall higher operation flexibility, with an estimated 60% reduction of the total weight/energy consumption capacities compared to State-of-the-Art solutions.
