At OXCCU, we are turning waste carbon into sustainable aviation fuel, chemicals and biodegradable plastics.
Our mission is to develop the world’s lowest cost, lowest emission pathways to make jet fuel from waste carbon. This allows people to continue flying and using hydrocarbon products without the climate impact.
We use a one-step catalyst and process to convert CO2 and green hydrogen into jet fuel range hydrocarbons, with fewer steps, lower energy input and high yield. Our novel catalyst also works with mixtures of CO2, CO and H2 meaning it is also suitable for converting biogas and gasified carbon waste into jet fuel with very low carbon intensity. In all cases the goal is the same, reducing the cost and complexity of sustainable fuel production.
In a net zero world, we will still need hydrocarbons. Aviation requires energy-dense liquid fuels. Petrochemicals and plastics rely on carbon as the backbone of their molecules. But with no fossil fuels, we need new sources. The solution is to make them from waste carbon.
Our proprietary catalyst and reactor system enables high-yield conversion from flexible feedstocks into drop-in fuels. We’ve simplified the process, reduced emissions and cut capital costs by half compared to traditional e-fuel or biofuel pathways.
Our first demonstration plant, OX1, based at Oxford Airport, is producing sustainable aviation fuel directly from CO2 and H2. It’s the first of its kind and a major step towards scaling clean, cost-effective alternatives to fossil jet fuel.
OXCCU was spun out from the University of Oxford in 2021 by Andrew Symes and Jane Jin, and is underpinned by scientific breakthroughs from Professor Peter Edwards, Dr Tiancun Xiao and Dr Benzhen Yao.
This is the future of truly circular technological advancement. One where people can fly, use household chemicals and buy disposable and biodegradable plastic products without concerns about their impact on the planet.
