We are a diverse community coalition of elders, fishers, cultural practitioners, navigators, scientists, nonprofit leaders, and storytellers from across Oceania working to expand the protections of the Pacific Remote Islands. We are brought together by a love for the ocean that connects and sustains us.
The Pacific Remote Islands contain some of the last wild and healthy ecosystems in the world’s oceans. The region, located in the Pacific Ocean, is home to resilient coral reef ecosystems, including threatened and endangered wildlife of global conservation importance such as seabirds, sharks, rays, sperm and blue whales, the leatherback sea turtle and deep-sea life found nowhere else on Earth.
The PRI Coalition is working to ensure that President Biden follows through with his support to fully protect the area, engage in a collaborative process to design a co-management plan inclusive of Indigenous Pacific Islanders and rename the Pacific Remote Islands to one that recognizes the pre-colonization and voyaging history of Pacific Peoples in the region.
