We began working on a small portable device designed to circulate and oxygenate blood to substantially prolong the life of persons who have sustained severe traumatic injury. It was designed to increase survivability during transport to help the patient get to life saving surgery or at the very least to sustain organs to increase organ transplant viability.
In the first week of March, the doctors on our advisory committee informed us that they no longer had any time to dedicate to this project as a new virus was now at pandemic proportions and they were overwhelmed with patients requiring all of their time. They challenged us to rethink our project into something that could help with this overwhelming outbreak.
We rethought everything, and ECHO was born.
