Papawhakaritorito Trust

Papawhakaritorito Trust is a charitable trust that exists to undertake kaupapa Māori research, education and practices that uplift Māori and Indigenous food sovereignty, hua parakore (Māori organics) and tino rangatiratanga (Indigenous sovereignty). Our love is to storytell, share our learnings and build critical Indigenous and allied food communities across the planet to decolonise our food systems and build more resilient food futures for us all. Founding Trustees Dr Jessica Hutchings (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Huirapa, Gujarati) and Associate Professor Jo Smith (Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu) are passionate about seeding and growing Māori food sovereignty and tino rangatiratanga through kaupapa Māori and Indigenous pathways. Previous collaborative work includes the publication of Te Mahi Oneone Hua Parakore: A Māori Soil Sovereignty and Wellbeing Handbook (2020: Freerange Press) and the project Storying Kaitiakitanga. Jessica and Jo are currently co-leading a three year project called Kai Atua: Food for Hope and Wellbeing and will publish a book at the end of 2024 to tell the stories behind this research. The Trust also develops online courses and sells merchandise, with all proceeds going towards practices to uplift Māori and Indigenous seed, soil and food sovereignty.
