The Pacific And Regional Archive For Digital Sources In Endangered Cultures (Paradisec) company information, Employees & Contact Information

PARADISEC (Pacific And Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures) is a digital archive dedicated to preserving and providing access to records of small and endangered languages and cultures. The archive follows international standards for digital archiving, ensuring long-term accessibility for communities and researchers. The project has developed a framework for accessioning, cataloguing, and digitising audio, text, and visual materials to prevent the loss of irreplaceable cultural data. A key objective is to return recordings to the communities they document, preserving them for future generations. Copies have been distributed to institutions across the Pacific, including in Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, French Polynesia, the Solomon Islands, and Rapa Nui. Australia is situated in a region of immense linguistic diversity, with over 2000 languages spoken across Australia, the South Pacific, and Southeast Asia. Many of these languages are at risk of disappearing within the next century, with limited documentation available—particularly in cultural expressions such as music and ritual languages. Since the mid-20th century, Australian researchers have collected unique audiovisual recordings, yet until PARADISEC’s establishment, there was no dedicated national repository for these materials. PARADISEC operates as a consortium of three universities: • University of Sydney (hosted by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music) • University of Melbourne (School of Languages and Linguistics) • Australian National University (School of Literature, Languages, and Linguistics (SLLL/CASS) and School of Culture, History and Language (CHL/CAP))
