The food sector in the UK is responsible for approximately 1/3 of total greenhouse gas emissions and around 18% of final energy demand, whilst employing 13% of the UK workforce (4 million people) and with a revenue of just over £240bn per year. Within this massive sector, our geographical focus is on the Park Royal industrial estate, a research and innovation cluster that is central to the success of its regional economy, West London, whilst also being a core component of the UK’s critical food infrastructure.
Our aim is to reduce carbon cost, improve resilience and drive economic growth in the food supply systems passing through Park Royal.
Our objectives are:
• Energy use reduction in the food supply chain
• Food waste minimisation and valorisation
• Building capacity for innovation and increasing productivity in the food supply chain
• Accelerating the uptake of low energy and advanced technology in food
• To be an exemplar and catalyst for carbon reduction across the whole of the UK food system.
• Strengthen the research and innovation infrastructure supporting Park Royal.
