The Research, Innovate and Emerge (RIEm), is designed to help businesses to access innovation funding and grow. RIEm has produced some good results for the SMEs attending the programme, applying for, and winning, public funding for collaborative research and innovation with a university partner.
Since the launch of RIEm Programme in 2021, the programme has already helped 48 SMEs. These organisations represent the following sectors: Advanced Manufacturing, Creative Arts, Clean Energy, Digital Economy and Healthcare and MedTech. A third edition is planned for 2024.
The programme is divided into phases. First phase is dedicated to assess the current research and innovation capabilities of the SMEs and to familiarise them with R&I strategies. The following phases are oriented towards the organisation specific R&I strategy development and assisting the SMEs for Research and Innovation proposal development. The Final phase focuses on submitting successful Research and Innovation proposal. Each of the phases had a purpose-built workshop and 1:1 mentoring session from the expert consultant to help with the specific needs of the business.
Geoff Rodgers, Pro Vice Chancellor-Enterprise and Employment said: “The RIEm programme helps businesses to access tailor made university research expertise to validate their solution and secure innovation funding”.

Brunel University will be launching RIEm India very soon to help scaleups in India to access innovation funding.
