The new EU Eco-Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) came into force on 18th July 2024. This regulation is focused on improving the overall circularity and both energy and environmental sustainability performance of products. This framework sets guidelines and benchmarks on multiple components including product durability, reusability, resource efficiency and carbon footprints. The key mechanism for capturing and sharing this data is a Digital Product Passport (DPP) solution that will provide multiple stakeholders with a detailed breakdown of the products’ sustainability credentials. Businesses are now faced with regulations that will mandate that any product that enters the EU market must comply with the related legislation, meaning that they will have to carry an associated DPP – even if the company is registered in non-EU territories. The benefits to businesses are numerous, including transparency, traceability and tradability for their brands, and thus also benefits for the consumer, by increasing their confidence in the product and being able to verify the compliance and sustainability attributes. However, this is likely to be seen as an additional sunk cost expense. Our solution that implements ESPR compliant DPPs to enable businesses to meet the forthcoming legislation while offering a unique pseudo-anonymous direct-to-consumer marketing channel.
