paybox.net was a pioneer in mobile payments. Founded in 1999 paybox.net launched the first large scale mobile payment service in Germany in May 1999. Shortly afterwards the service was also launched in Austria, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Paybox signed-up close to 1 million consumers and over 10,000 merchants, but had to shut down it's service due to a lack of funding in the recession in early 2003. After the operational payment service was stopped, paybox run a successful mobile payment technology and solution business. The brand and all assets of the company were acquired by Sybase Inc. in December 2008. Sybase was subsequently acquired by SAP and the paybox service is now a core part of the SAP financial service portfolio.
