Dear Small And Medium Contractor In The Civil & Infrastructure Construction Industry.
You and I know that we pursued Civil Engineering because we love to apply numbers and science to conquer nature. We strive to power communities with bridges, roads, airports, railways, power plants, etc.
But we secretly complain that we can't spend more time on numbers and construction, with family, friends, and ourselves...because the reality in Civil & Infrastructure Construction is away from magic numbers and designing and building great things.
What we've got instead?
- long cycles of payment (it is hard to keep cash flow pumping with 90+ days to get paid)
- rework
- long cycles of design revisions (bad design, change orders, etc.)
- trying to sync planning with execution with outdated technology (it is hard to keep up with change using plain spreadsheets, radio, and email)
- getting 100+ permits
- dealing with 10K+ documents
- dealing with tight deadlines, and budgets
- bad weather conditions
- unskilled labor
- procurement chaos: overstock, stock-out, material shortage, waste, leaks, deviations, material misuse, non-compliant material, material defects, etc.
- collecting, storing, and reusing construction data
- worries about not having enough projects in the business pipeline (or fear of bidding unprofitable projects)
Nobody prepared us for surviving such a burden.
Software is here to help but many construction applications suck...and are also a burden because they are developed by outsider Civil Engineers or by programmers who don't understand the subtle way we think neither the hardships we go through.
