About PEPPER Hydrogen project

PEPPER (Performant and Efficient Planar Proton-conducting Electrolysis Reactor) is an EU-funded research and innovation project accelerating the transition to sustainable green hydrogen production. Green hydrogen is a key solution for decarbonising the energy system, reducing environmental harm, and fighting climate change. Yet, current production methods can’t keep pace with growing demand. PEPPER is developing a novel electrochemical reactor based on planar proton-conducting ceramic electrolysis cells (PCCEL). Operating at 600 °C, this technology integrates seamlessly with industrial waste heat, increasing efficiency while lowering energy use and emissions. The project aims to validate core technologies, set new performance benchmarks, and deliver a roadmap for rapid scale-up, industrialisation, and commercialisation. By making green hydrogen production more efficient and cost-effective, PEPPER supports Europe’s clean energy goals — and helps sectors like heavy transport, steel, and chemicals shift away from fossil fuels.
