The aim of the proposed project is the development and demonstration at laboratory scale of an innovative, low-cost and high yield process for electrical power production from industrial wastewaters. This will be achieved employing an integrated system comprising a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for H2 production and a H2-fuelled anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) for electricity production. The use of low-cost perovskite oxides as electrocatalytic materials will drastically reduce the cost of both MEC and AEMFC whereas the application of a continuous-flow MEC design (CF-MEC) will dramatically increase hydrogen production and overall system efficiency.
