Perthes Kids Foundation (501c3) was established to help raise global awareness for children and families suffering from Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease, a rare and degenerative bone disease (osteonecrosis) that makes it painful to walk.
Legg–Calvé–Perthes syndrome is a degenerative disease of the hip joint, where growth/loss of bone mass leads to some degree of collapse of the hip joint and to deformity of the ball of the femur and the surface of the hip socket. The disease is characterized by idiopathic avascular osteonecrosis of the capital femoral epiphysis of the femoral head leading to an interruption of the blood supply of the head of the femur close to the hip joint, causing chronic pain and imbalance. The disease is typically found in young children (4 or 5 out of 100,000, ages 3-12), and it can lead to osteoarthritis in adults.
It is also known more simply as Perthes disease, ischemic necrosis of the hip, coxa plana, osteochondritis and avascular necrosis of the femoral head, Legg–Calvé-Perthes Disease (LCPD). There is no known cause for the disease, and currently, there is no cure. It is treated in various ways from hip surgeries, fixators, leg braces, petri casts, wheelchairs and walkers.
Perthes Kids Foundation organizes and sponsors a special summer camp just for kids with LCPD, Camp Perthes International (est. 2013), which takes place every year in the USA, UK, Australia, South America & Japan.
