What is Pervious Concrete
A Pervious concrete pavement is a unique and effective means to meet growing environmental demands. By capturing rainwater and allowing it to seep into the ground, pervious concrete is instrumental in recharging groundwater, reducing stormwater runoff, and meeting Environmental agencies stormwater regulations. In fact, the use of pervious concrete is among the Best Management Practices (BMP) recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — and by other agencies and geotechnical engineers across the United States and Europe—for the management of stormwater runoff.
Pervious Concrete pavement technology creates more efficient land use by providing enough water storage capacity thus eliminating the need for retention ponds, swales or other stormwater management and precipitation runoff containment strategies.
Pervious Concrete voids, typically between 15% and 25%, are achieved in the hardened concrete, and flow rates for water through pervious concrete are usually around 480 inches of water per hour (0.34 cm/sec, which is 5 gallons per square foot per min or 200 Litres per square meter per minute), although, the flow rates can be much higher. We have personally witnessed 5 gallons of water per square foot in 24 seconds. While pervious concrete can be used for a surprising number of applications, its primary use is in pavements such as parking lots, driveways, sidewalks and walkways.
