Starting in 1904, the company pioneered radical motorcycle designs that broke away from conventional motorized bicycles. Phelon’s revolutionary open-frame design, with the engine replacing the down tube as a stressed member, patented in 1902 is often regarded as the first true motorcycle rather than a simple motorized bicycle, giving birth to one of the greatest British motorcycle company of the last century.
Their most famous product line, the Panther, was introduced in the 1920s, with models like the Panther Model 100 and later the Panther Model 120, which became legendary for their robust construction and enduring appeal. Phelon & Moore motorcycles played a significant role during both World Wars, serving the Royal Flying Corps and gaining a reputation for reliability in extreme conditions.
In 1934-36, the brand's legacy of adventure was further immortalized by Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron, two daring women, both former motorcycle racers and mechanics, who crossed the Sahara desert and the African continent on a Phelon & Moore Panther motorcycle, setting a benchmark for resilience and exploration. The adventure is mostly known by the posthumous book “The Rugged Road” based on Teresa’s diary and pictures taken during the journey.
Re-established in 2022, the Phelon & Moore® brand takes inspiration from this rich heritage with modern design and technology.
