We bring an affordable treatment for heart muscle disease PLN from the lab to the patient. We do this in close collaboration with the PLN Foundation. The foundation's goal is to find an affordable treatment for the disease as quickly as possible. We join in by getting this possible treatment to the patient.
Calcium ions in the heart muscle cells are important for our heart to beat. The protein phospholamban (PLN) plays an important role in the calcium metabolism of heart muscle cells. In 2010, a mutation (change in DNA) in the PLN gene was linked to the development of heart muscle disease in the Netherlands. The Dutch mutation concerns the absence of the amino acid arginine (Arg) at position 14 and is therefore called in scientific terms: PLN p.Arg14del (1).
Our job is to bring scientific breakthroughs from the lab to the patient. For us, this means: developing an affordable treatment for PLN. We work closely with the foundation for research into these new treatments. The work that comes next is our responsibility.
