The Port of St. Maarten is a Cruise, Cargo and Giga Yacht terminal operating in the North of the Caribbean.
In 1962, the island's first deep water pier was opened and was named after the visionary leader of this plan, Dr. A. C. Wathey. Over the year his hard work and perseverance keep him pushing forward for larger harbor facilities. More than a half a century passed and now the Port of St. Maarten is a world class cruise, cargo and yachting terminal.
Cruising
The Port of St. Maarten Cruise terminal has two piers which can accommodate six cruise ship, one pier facilitating Genesis-class vessels. In a single day up to 20,000 passengers are welcomed.
In 2011 the Port of St. Maarten reached a milestone with 1.6 million cruise passengers being received for the year.
Cargo
The Port of St. Maarten's Captian David Cargo Quay is located on the south end of the Port of St. Maarten. It is a 540 meters long with a depth of 10.5 meters. This property has a capacity of 3,000 teu container storage, handles up to 75,000 teu each year with the help of two Gottwald HMK 260E mobile harbor cranes and serves as a transshipment hub for Anguilla, Montserrat, St. Barths, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Antigua and Barbados.
Yachting
Although the main yachting facilities are in the Simpson bay Lagoon, the Port of St. Maarten has provided the means for Giga Yachts to dock in the Philipsburg area. It also services these yachts with fuel which is a collaboration between Sol and the Port of St. Maarten.
In addition to the 3 services that the Port of St. Maarten provides, it also invested in wind and solar energy, as a means of reducing the carbon dioxide emissions that comes from the cruise and cargo facilities being in such close proximity.
