With the rise of sedentary jobs spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been leading increasingly sedentary lifestyles involving 8+ hours of sitting per day. Slouching is a natural, unconscious result of this lifestyle, as it is difficult for a person to sustain good posture for long periods of time. Slouching results in muscle stiffness, which in the short term means muscle aches after a long day of work. However, if these habits are sustained for many years, this muscle stiffness can damage muscles beyond repair, leading to debilitating chronic pain and high healthcare costs. We aim to solve the problem of chronic pain that results in individuals with sedentary lifestyles. We know that the root of this problem is muscle stiffness. Thus, we propose to solve it through a smart wearable that can both detect this muscle stiffness and predict muscle pain along with a mobile app that provides real-time insights and analytics along with personalized fitness suggestions. Our solution is unique in three key ways: firstly, it focuses on muscle condition rather than pose detection. Secondly, it condenses muscle sensing technology, which currently requires bulky, expensive equipment into a low-cost wearable. Lastly, it offers a holistic, intervention-based approach that is perfect for sedentary workers who want to adopt healthier habits but are unsure how to begin.
