Pozo Izquierdo (often referred to as Pozo) is a rugged, unforgiving surf spot known as one of the most challenging places for surfers on earth. Located on the wild east coast of Gran Canaria, Pozo offers no luxury or comfort, but instead hard winds, sharp rocks, and an unpredictable sea that only the most seasoned surfers dare to face. The constant, powerful trade winds regularly reach speeds of over 50 knots – a phenomenon known among surfers as the “nuclear wind.” These winds transform the sea into a boiling mass of steep, irregular waves that break on the rocky seabed. Pozo is a place that tests you and shapes your character, where nothing is forgiven. It’s a place where the elements reign supreme, and only those with nerves of steel and experience dare to enter the water. The coastline is barren and desolate, with barely any vegetation or shelter, and the only sounds you hear are the howling wind and the crashing waves. The village center of Pozo itself is simple, unadorned, with a few weathered buildings and small eateries that primarily cater to surfers. It was on this boulevard, 25 years ago, that my metaphor for entrepreneurship was born: Pozo. Pozo embodies everything that entrepreneurship demands: resilience, the passion that drives you, nerves that must be conquered, and the experience you build through endless practice and training. Just like the world champions who have honed their skills here, entrepreneurship is about perseverance, the strength to keep growing, and the determination to succeed. But Pozo is more than that – it’s also a community where people support each other, where social contact and collaboration are central, and where the shared struggle against the elements forges a bond that makes everyone stronger.
