We believe that biomass, and waste biomass in particular, holds a great, yet unexploited, potential for the development of innovative materials capable of leading the transition from an oil-based to a sustainable society that relies upon circular economy paradigms. In this framework, our core scientific competences and interests lie in the area of green chemistry and materials with a specific focus on: - Structural elucidation of natural polyphenols - Development of fractionation methods for technical lignins - Chemical and enzymatic oxidative upgrade of lignins - High-performance thermoplastics and thermosets from renewable resources - High added-value micro- and nano-structures from (waste) biomass: Microcapsules for the release of actives Nanoparticles for composites and drug delivery purposes (Carbon) nanofibers for polymer reinforcement, energy and biomedical applications
