Music is unlike anything else in the world. Totally unique in the way it stimulates and extreme in its potential to emotionally and spiritually impact a person. Its existence makes no sense. We don't really need it, yet everybody uses it. It takes nothing to sing out and still brings so much joy. It is totally ubiquitous to the human experience, spreading farther than even Facebook to cultures all around the world. Music brings us together and also germinates new and odd subcultures. Like life itself, music has tensions and resolutions. We learn from music that it will be alright again, but first it may need to get crazy. Music is the index and table of contents of life, the greatest time machine of nostalgia. Music is so powerful, not because it changes the world physically, but because it changes the way we experience the world, which is the same.
The trajectory of music throughout the ages has culminated in now. From caveman fire dancing music, to spiritual music, to discos and raves; From harpsichords to theremins, player pianos and records to Limewire, iPods, and Spotify; when we listen to music, we wonder: where will this song take us next? Then a good song will always somehow meet and destroy expectations at the same time. Where will the music go?
